Fannett is in Jefferson County, Texas

10 miles southwest of Beaumont

Fannett is directly served by Interstate 10, FM 365, and State Highway 124. Traveling through Beaumont gains access to US Highways 96 and 69, State Highway 105, and US Highway 287.  There are different ways to access State Highway 73 and US Hwy. 69, which give access to State Highways 82 and 87, running through Sabine Pass.   About 15 miles northwest of Fannett at Nome, there is Old US Highway 90, which parallels IH-10 to Houston (part of the Old Spanish Trail, rumored to be haunted).  Fannett is very flat.

One can sneak up on Beaumont by taking some of the larger streets off of Hwy. 124, such as S. Major Drive, and connecting with the western end of other major thoroughfares.  Since Beaumont is currently embroiled in major highway constructions projects, utilizing these "backroads" for access to work, shopping and dining is a distinct advantage.  Driving east on FM 365 brings you into the communities of LaBelle and Port Acres, and right through the Port Arthur shopping district along Hwy 69, giving further access to Nederland, Port Neches, and Groves.   Hwy. 73 brings you past some of the larger Industrial areas of Port Arthur, before crossing the Rainbow Bridge and leading north into Orange County.

Heart of the Petrochemical Triangle

Beaumont was home to the Spindletop gusher of 1901, sparking the Petrochemical Industry that dominates southeast Texas to this day. The “Golden Triangle”, comprised of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange, is home to many refineries, chemical plants, manufacturers, storage facilities, energy and power generation, and the myriads of businesses that have sprung up to support them.  Fannett itself is home to a Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant built in 1961.

This region features ExxonMobil Corporation, Motiva Enterprises, Helena Laboratories, Valero Energy, and Optimus Steel - just to name a very few.  There are currently large construction projects, including the Beaumont New Ammonia Project, Port Arthur LNG Phase 2, Golden Pass LNG, and the Golden Triangle Polymers Project, as well as the new venture between Chevron Phillips Chemical and Qatar Energy in Orange. New Electrical generating stations are planned to furnish energy to the projects,  the people, and the data.  There is currently a LOT going on in this part of Texas and southwest Louisiana, and if this is where you work, Fannett is a great place to start out from.

Better education

Hamshire-Fannett ISD has an accountability rating of "B", compared with somewhat less (D) for the Beaumont and Port Arthur school districts.  Elementary, Middle, and High School campuses are all within the local community.  The average teacher/student ration is 15:1.

Lamar University is located in Beaumont, also with campuses in Port Arthur and Orange.  Beaumont also offers several Christian private schools, charter schools, and purpose-based academies focused on science, technology, and trades.

Summers in Fannett are hot, and sometimes peppered with hurricanes (Be aware).  Winters are very mild, and a dusting of snow is a newsworthy event.  Rain is usually plentiful, and the fine art of lawn mowing is a regular practice.  Rice, cattle, and crawfish are major crops in this region.  The native soil is black clay and beach deposits, plenty fertile for gardens and nurseries.

The Beaches

Hwy. 124 runs right to the water near High Island, an important stopover for migrating birds.  Clovis points are sometimes found along McFaddin Beach, and historical Galveston Island is close by.  Sabine Pass and Louisiana beaches are reached through Port Arthur.  As teens, we knew that if we had the gas money to get to the beach and back...an entire day's entertainment was free!
